Take Your Wife Fishing!

Jim is always taking large groups of guys fishing to the fish camps in Mexico sponsored by Ron Speed Jr. Adventures. But this time, he took me along. I don’t think you can imagine how many fish stories or fish pictures I’ve seen during my marriage to Jim. Every week for over 34 years if that gives you any idea. A LOT!!!!! To the point that I couldn’t imagine these trips being that good until I got the chance to experience it myself.
We headed to Mazatlán, MX in February (BTW weather was great) to fish lake Picachos which was a short drive from Mazatlán. I joined a small group of guys, our best friends, Rick Stewart, Jeff Lenard, Erich Cline and Phillip Trevellyan. We all flew out on Volaris Airlines out of Tijuana, MX and was met at the airport by Ron Speed Jr.’s vans to take us to the camp at the lake. Once arrived at the camp we were assigned our very own cabin, comfortable and private with air conditioning I might add. We unloaded, met at the outdoor patio for dinner which was provided by the camp and the food was fresh and delicious. (These people know how to cook.) YAY! Vacation from cooking alone was great. But sitting around the table listening to all the fish stories of trips past was enough to get you all excited about going out the next day to catch these monster bass. I got excited. It had been over 10 years since I had been fishing with Jim even at home, so this was a very exciting trip for me. I was hoping I remembered how to catch a fish, it had been so long. Just the fact Jim invited me was good enough for me.
The next morning, we met for breakfast, which was more food than you can eat, and piled into our own bass boat with our very own personal fishing guide. These guides know the lake and where the fish are so they take you right to the spots that hold the most fish. The morning was crisp with a slight breeze which made the water very still. You fishermen know that sometimes it’s hard to catch fish when the water is smooth as glass. You need a little ripple across the water to get the fish excited. BUT it didn’t matter to these fish, they were biting. I caught over 50 fish my first day of fishing. I couldn’t believe it. Big ones, little ones and they were at every place we stopped. I caught fish on baits I’d never used and on my favorite bait too. (yes, I have a favorite bait and his name is Thumper!) I thought we were doing great but my husband said “NO” we want to find the honey hole. He kept insisting we move to find it. I had no idea what he could be talking about, I was in heaven. I had caught over 50 fish so that meant he caught at least 100 the first day. Most of the guys caught 100 fish each. After hearing all the fish stories at dinner that night I was in shock at how many fish were in this lake. It was crazy.
One of the groups of guys, Jeff and Erich had found the honey hole, the mother load, the sweet spot. Jeff had caught over 150 and Erich caught just as many. The rest of us, especially Jim wanted to know where, on what bait, how were they fishing-fast or slow. (you guys know what I mean) My sweet husband was determined that I get to experience one of these fishing phenomenon’s before I left. I only had one and half days of fishing with the guys before I met up with my girlfriend, Lynnette Stewart (Rick’s wife) who was back at the resort in Mazatlán where I was going to spend a day on the beach with her before the guys met up with us. Time was of the essence to find this honey hole.
My last day of fishing consisted of only a half day before I went back to town to meet up with Lynnette. So, Jim had the guide take us to the areas where he thought the fish would be. I bet we moved spots every 15 minutes. We found fish at each spot but not the sweet spot. Jim was getting frustrated because we were running out of time. Then we saw Jeff and Eric and cruised over to them. They had already caught over 60 fish each and it was only 11 o’clock in the morning. We anchored and started fishing. It was magical. One fish after another. So, THIS is why they keep coming back time and again. Now I get it. It was a blast.
I left for the resort feeling like I had been blessed and cheated at the same time. I had only 1 hour of this phenomenal fishing before lunch and we had to head back to camp. But it was the most exciting hour of fishing I’ll always remember. But seriously, the whole trip was wonderful. I have never caught that many fish. Even without finding the honey hole. I hope I get to go again. (I’ll insist on it.) You guys need to take your wives at least once so she’ll understand your obsession.
